![]() The following is as a short history of Michael and Kate and their children. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Michael Herlihy and Kate Donelly were marry on 8th August 1854 in Rathmore, Kilcummin, Co. Kerry according to the OKief work. A 1991 extract from the marriage register has Cornelius and Mary Donelly as witnesses but with the date of 8th August 1855. The only Michael, that I found, was baptize on December 13th, 1828 in Mahanamaradagh and his parents were Thomas Herlihy and Catherine Murphy. I have not found any other children for Thomas and Catherine. Reason for this could be one or both of his parents had an early death or he was the last of many children and baptism records before 1824 are very scarce. Kate came from Coom, Kilcummin, Co. Kerry. I do not know who her parents were, but I believe she had a brother name Daniel. I have a Daniel Donnelly as a witness to one of Michael and Kate children. |

Thomas Herlihy was alive and living in Kingwilliamstown as late as 1916. That is when his niece, Mary Herlihy, immigrated to New York and she put down on the ship manifest that her last address was with her Uncle Thomas in Kingwilliamstown, Co. Cork.

Katherine Herlihy Murphy died in 1896 while giving birth. Found no record of child. Properly a stillborn. She was marry to Michael Murphy. He was nineteen years older than her. He died on March 24, 1908, in Harlem Hospital, New York, NY, at age 70.

Arthur Thomas and George maybe the one and the same. Michael Francis was living with the Michael Herlihy family on the 1920 census.

Michael Francis Herlihy married Julia Goulding. Michael arrived in New York aboard the SS Arizona on April 19, 1886. Julia arrived in 1888. I believe he married her in New York. I believe they were either married in St. Francis DeSales or Our Lady of Good Council.

According to recent revelation this household was not a
very happy one. I have now learn
that Michael sons, William, disability was cause by
Michael anger over a pile of clothes on a bed. In a rage
he picked up the clothes and threw them against the wall.
William was among the clothes and his head got bang
against the wall. It was a few months after this incident
that Julia died from a botch abortion on 9 June 1914. In 1916, Michael brought his niece, Mary
Herlihy, daughter of his brother Patrick and Ellen Goulding Herlihy,
to New York, because he needed cheap help to raise his
children. But more trouble was brought to this disturb
home with the birth of twins, Helen and Patrick, to Mary
on September 13th, 1921. (baby Patrick died within a month of
his birth.) Mary could not marry the father of the
children. The father was Michael son, Thomas, and they
were double first cousins. Not only was Michael and
Patrick both brothers but Julia and Ellie were also
sisters. Because of this embarrassing situation, Helen, the surviving
infant,
was an outcast as she grew up and never had contact with her
father. The following year, three weeks after his older
brother Michael "Frank" married Edna Mae Bauss,
Thomas married Anna Stanek on July 12th, 1922. Frank,
Thomas, Cornelius and Irene (Kandl) are in Mary Golding's
1938 will. Michael died on 2 October 1940 at the age of
80 while living with his nieces family, Michael and
Anne Barry. In 49, Frank died at Grand Central
Station from a heart attack. He was on his way home from
work. It wasnt until June of 95, that I found out what happen to Thomas and Anna. I check the New York City death index for all HERLIHYs. I took a chance and ordered a copy of a death certificate. It turn out to be the right one. The death certificate had him buried in Calvary. From the information, I obtained from Calvary, I was able to find his wife, Anna, in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI). The SSDI had her receiving her last benefits in Pittsburgh and her burial benefit going to Brooklyn, NY. There was only one Herlihy listed in the Pittsburgh phone book and it turn out to be their son, William. He was very friendly but lack any information or pictures on the Herlihy family. He even claimed he didnt know where his older brother, Thomas Michael Anthony, was living. Thomas bought his Brooklyn home in 1953 and sold in 1989. The year he surrendered his driving license. His wife, Josephine died in 1990. I gather there was something that broke up the family or Bill is extremely careful about sharing family information. But thanks to my web site, a descendant of Irene contacted me in February of 98 with some information on the Herlihy line. I now know that Frank and Edna had no children. Thomas and Anna only had the two boys. That Cornelius married a Catherine Oates and had three sons, Roger, Robert and Russell. I still have not found Cornelius birth certificate. I calculated his birth from census data. |

Bridget Herlihy is completely unknown except for her birth. Properly died young because the name Bridget was given to an later child.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Timothy Herlihy is completely unknown except for his birth. There was a Timothy Herlihy living with John and Hanna Goulding Murphy on the 1920 census.

Nora Herlihy is completely unknown except for her baptism.

Patrick Herlihy married Ellie Goulding on February 6th, 1897 in Glountanebeg, Cullen, Millstreet, Co. Cork. Witnesses to the marriage were Cornelius Goulding and Denis Lane. He listed his occupation as carpenter on the birth registrar of his children.

Four days after their marriage, their first child, Catherine, was baptize on the 10th of February, 1897 in Glountanebeg, Cullen, Co. Cork. Mary, my grandmother, was the second born on May 6th, 1898 in the Boherboy district, Williamstown, Nohavaldaly, Co. Cork. She always lied about her age. She always claimed she was born in 1900. I have a copy of her birth certificate. I have copies of the register pages that contains Michaels birth on September 11th, 1900 and Johns birth on June 24th, 1902. Thomas Patrick, is born on October 26th, 1905, but I and the present registrar cant find him in the birth index. I do not know what happen to Catherine. She is not in Mary Goulding will, therefore she must have died before 1936. She suppose to have died in Drishane, Ireland. On November 5, 1916, Mary came to New York aboard the SS. St. Louis. John, according to family legend, died in the Rebellion. The SS. Muen Chen manifest, has Michael arriving in New York on April 7, 1929 and staying with an Aunt OConnors at 171 Chatham St., New Haven, Connecticut. The 1920 census has a Timothy and Hannah OConnor living there. He is 38, she is 41. They have four children, Dennis age 6, Timothy age 5, Martin age 3 8/12 and Helen age 1 6/12. They both immigrated in 1908. The manifest also states his father, Patrick, is in Headford, Co. Kerry. Connors is a surname I have seen several times on Herlihy documents and according to Mary Daly Herlihy, her father-in-law died in Headford. So, I am almost positive that I found the correct Michael Herlihy manifest. But I have a problem with Mrs. OConnors first name of Hannah on the 1920 census. I know of no Hannah/Johanna born in 1879 or any other year to Michael and Kate, and I know what happen to Hannah Goulding. My mother remembers seeing Michael when she was young. He was mad at someone. Months later, police informed them that he was murder. I do not know where or when this took place. I didnt find his death certificate in the New York five boros. He could have been kill anywhere in the metropolitan area. But, the biggest events that I am missing are the where and when for Patrick and Ellie deaths!

Bridget Herlihy is completely unknown except for her birth. According to Mary Daly Herlihy, she died on the 19th of July, 1948.

Mary Herlihy Regan was completely unknown except for her baptism until Michael Regan informed me that she was her grandmother. I hope to get more details on her life in England.

Margaret Herlihy Quigley was completely unknown except for her baptism until Michael Regan supplied me with some information. She was still living home on the 1901 census. She apparently follow Mary to England and met a Quigley. She had at least one child name Anne. She in turned married Michael Barry. It is not sure if Mr. Barry was English or American. They in turned also had at least one daughter name Shelia and she married Ray Markey. Four children are known of this union and they are Eileen, Brian, Ray and Mary Alice.
